Gilley Cemetery
Gilley Cemetery is located on CR 3655 about 3 miles east of Boonsville. It is visible on the north side of the road, but is out in the pasture about 100 yards. In 2001 There was a white pipe fenced lane just to the east of the cemetery. In 2010 all of the fences had been replaced with a tall pipe and cattle pannel fence. The farm sign said 'Black Rock Ranch'. Drive down the lane and look for the cemetery fenced off in the pasture to the left.

The sign on the white fence in 2001 said "Gilley Cemetery est. 1860 by John B. Gilley".

The cemetery was
mowed and well kept when we took pictures of the 23
headstones in March 2001. We moved from the northeast corner south and west as
we numbered the headstones.

The upper picture of the Bethel-Boonsville Cemetery gate was made in March 2001 when the grass was tall. The picture below was made in 2010 and the grass had been mowed.

Bethel Cemetery (more than one in the county) is located about half a mile to the east of Gilley Cemetery. Like Gilley it is on the north side of CR 3655 about 100 yards from the road, but dense woods keep you from seeing it from the road. Look for the house pictured below on the right and across the road from it, turn left on the dirt road pictured below and you will see the double gate to the cemetery on the left.

When we took pictures
at Bethel-Boonsville, in March of 2001, the headstones were scattered toward the
back (west) part of the fenced cemetery area, and the cemetery had waist high
dead grass. Of the 27
headstones recorded in an earlier survey by Jim
Paschall of Cottondale, we were only able to find and picture 25.
The information from the previous survey is included in the
data in parenthesis ( ), and the two headstones we didn't find are noted with
'Not Found'.

This Bethel Cemetery is located about 100 yards to the north of CR 3655. History tells us Bethel was about 4 miles east of
Boonsville. A narrow dirt lane leads to the cemetery and a house near the cemetery, where someone lives. This area was a community called “Bethel” with several residents as early as the 1870s until the early 1900s. Homes still dot the area where Bethel is known to have been. Its main attraction was the Methodist Church that most likely sat within the Cemetery plot. Most of the graves sit toward the back of the plot and the front part is likely where the church sat. Walter Elbert Brown has not been found as the pastor of this church, but he had a role in guiding the youth to religion before his death, in 1896. These youth were people from ages 18 to 35. They belonged to the Epworth Youth Origination, at the church. With families having many children, there were certainly young people in the area who followed this religious movement, at Bethel. It has been suggested that a circuit preacher came to this church on a regular basis.
For over half a century the Epworth League, the Methodist youth organization, was especially strong in Texas. The group was authorized in 1890 by the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and local churches in Texas soon began organizing their youth in Epworth Leagues. The purpose of the leagues was to develop young church members in their religious life and to provide training in
churchmanship. The name Epworth came from the boyhood home, in England, of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. The Texas State Epworth League was organized in 1892, and meetings across the state were attracting 10,000 members, by 1896.
This small community of Bethel [likely named for its Methodist Bethel Church as were 2 other churches/communities in Wise County] stood for religion and hard work to raise big families in the western and eastern parts of Wise County. My study involves the black race who also had their own church near Rhome, Texas and they too belonged to the Epworth League of Texas. The cemetery grounds of the
Boonsville/Draco area are now overrun with weeds and grass and has been for several years. Approximately 27 graves are hidden from sight. These graves include 2 Civil War soldiers, and some Methodist members who lived their life as best they could and raised their many children to be upstanding residents of Wise County or other parts of the United States. There are several cemeteries in Wise County that are in the same weed and grass infested condition. A workforce needs to be established. Volunteers have been used, on occasion but this does not last for a long period.
