Short History of the Wimberly Family WIMBERLY IN WISE COUNTY

John Wimberly came to the colonies from England in the seventeenth century. He was granted 400 acres of land in Nansemond County, Virginia in 1683. He settled there between 1700 annd 1720.

James Wimberly was born in 1817 and came to Texas about 1840 on horseback, with a covered wagon group of settlers. The wagon train brought him to Red River county, Texas and he later traveled to Greenville, Texas and married Susie Hart in 1845. James and Susie had a large family. Among them were:

Susie Hart Wimberly died in Greenville, Hunt Co., Texas in 1855 and is buried in the Hart Cemetery in Rockwall County.

James married again about 1854 to Mrs. Sarah Anna (Johnson) Richey, who had two sons from a previous marriage. They came in ox wagons to Parker County about 1856.

There were several children, among them Jim Wimberly, who married Eliza McCorry in Reno, Parker County, Texas.

Isaac Wimberly, son of James and Cynthia Ann Hart Wimberly, was born in Hunt County, near Greenville, Texas in 1851. He came with his father and step-mother to Parker County Parker County, and lived there until he was grown. He came to Wise County and settled on a farm not far from Boonsville, where he married Josephine Hefley in 1875. She was the daughter of J.M. (Doc) and Jane D. Cutberth Hefley. (See Hefley Family) Isaac (known as Ike) and Josephine Hefley Wimberly lived in Wise County and raised a family of six children:

John Martin Wimberly, born Dec 14, 1879, died Mar 24, 1913--married Linnie A. Jeter

William Edgar (Will), born June 6, 1882, died June 4, 1953-- married Margaret Montford

Maggie Jane, born May 10, 1885, died May 30, 1919--married Dave Ingle

Nellie Mae, born Aug 20, 1888--married Henry Hitchins

Myrtle Ruth, born Aug 4, 1891, died Jan 1915.

Ike and Josephine Hefley Wimberly were among the early settlers in Wise County and both their sons remained for many years. Ike had an urge to go to the new Indian Territory when it opened up. In 1905, he and his wife and three youngest daughters moved in a covered wagon to Cimarron County, Oklahoma, near Sampsel, in the Western corner of Oklahoma, (about 30 miles from Boise City.) They homesteaded several hundred acres and remained for the rest of their lives. The three daughters also settled there and married and have descendents in the county to this day. Ike died in 1933 and Josephine in December 1940. Both are buried in the Mariella Cemetery, near Griggs, Oklahoma.
