ANDREW JACKSON MANN 1851-1929

Andrew Jackson Mann was born in Upshur County, Texas, the youngest of thirteen children born to John N. Mann and Delilah WOODY Mann. The family came to Wise county in 1858 and settled in the Deep Creek Community. He married Fidella WHARTON in 1882. She was born in GA. to Margaret S. MILLIGAN Wharton and Lafayette W. Wharton.

Andrew Mann and about 57 men, in 1891, signed a joint note for money to build a Baptist College. Andrew and Fidella had the following children:

Charles Edgar,1883; Frank Alvin, 1884; Grover Andrew, 1886; Lela, 1889; Wharton, 1893; Butch, 1895.

Both Andrew Mann, who died June 25, 1929, and Fidella Wharton Mann, who died April 22, 1937, are buried in Deep Creek, Wise County, Texas.



JOHN PATTERSON MANN called (J.P. or Pat)

Pat was born Nov. 19, 1898 at the old Mann home, one mile south of the settlement of Draco, in Wise County, Texas.

His father, William J. (Bill) Mann, son of James Mann, one of Wise County's first settlers. Bill Mann was elected sheriff of Wise County in 1881, served one term, and went back home to Draco. Bill Mann first married Mattie PERKINS, who died at the birth of twins, one of the twins also died at birth.

Lee, the surviving twin, also served as a sheriff of Wise County. He served two terms, starting in 1913.

Bill's second marriage was to Atlanta LINDSEY of Veal Station, Parker County, Texas. Eight boys and five girls were born to this union, three of whom perished in infancy.

Pat was fourth from the youngest, and married Lona Estella BUTLER, (daughter of Monroe and Rebecca BURGEN Butler ,) on December 25, 1919. Par and Lona had the following children:

Rosalie, 1920; and Votie A., 1927.

Rosalie married Robert N. GREGG, Jr. a member of the famed "Lost Battalion" of WWII. They have four daughters.

Votie married first, Rosemarie WALLACE, and second Rita RAMSDALE of Paradise, Texas. Votie and Rita had five children.



WILLIAM J. (Bill) MANN

Oldest son of James Mann and Margaret Stephenson Mann, he came to Wise County with his parents in June of 1854. They camped on the West Fork of the Trinity River at Cain Crossing, later known as Bobo Crossing, named because Bobo had a gin at this crossing for a time. arriving in Wise County in 1853, with Uncle Sam Woody and Ben Crews, they built the Woody log house, the first house built in Wise County, and went back to Tarrant County, to return the following summer to settle.

W.J.'s first schooling was in a log school house in Deep Creek Community, taught by Bob WALKER. He later went to school at Veal Station in Parker County, taught by Bill AKARD. While attending school in Parker County, he stayed with Uncle Bill Woody, who was a brother of Uncle Sam Woody. The five Woody brothers were: Sam, of Deep Creek, Bill and John, who settled near Veal Station, Brice, of Willow Creek area near Boonsville, and Hugh who lived in East Texas.

W.J. "Bill" Mann and Martha PERKINS were married in 1877 in Wise County. With a pre-emption claim of 180 acres of land on Rush Creek in Wise County, near a watering place known as Buzzard Springs, they settled down and began their family. Sadly, Martha died with the birth of twins, one of whom survived, and Martha and the other twin are buried in Cottondale.

The following year Bill Mann married Lantie LINDSEY INSMINGER, as her second husband. (Her first husband (and father of her son, Wash,) had been killed in a fight.

Bill and Lantie moved onto 160 acres known as the Sam Ewing Place on Garret's Creek. Bill had traded his original farm for this land in 1881.

MULLINS, John McCLUSKEY, Bob KINCANNON, The BUCKINGHAMS, Wild Henry FITZGERALD, The KELLEY'S, George STEVENSON, J.T. KIDD, T.B. NALL, Parson GREGORY, AND A DONAHUE family.

Bessie Nell, 1895; married Oscar COMBS, one girl and three boys.;

R.C. (Dick), 1897; married Thelma WILLIAMS, had two boys.;

John Patterson (Pat), 1898; married Lone Estella BUTLER, one son and one daughter.;

R.B. (Burley), 1901; married Cuba LEACHMAN, one son and one daughter;
