ABBOTT
I am a native of Montague County, Texas. I retired from the Army in 1986 and remained in El Paso, Texas, as that seemed like the thing to do at the time. I am tracing the Newsom family tree. The Newsom family is quite large, but I am only doing the portion that applys to my family. I am working on family tradition in this matter. According to family tradition, Daniel Newson migrated from Quincy, Illinois prior to 1860 to Jack County. I have not been able to find any trace of him. I got some e-mail the other day that told me that he migrated to Wise County. The Wise County Daniel Newsom meets all of the prerrequisites of my Daniel Newsom, but I need to verify if it is the right one. His father was John R. Newsom (I think) and his mother was Mary Abbott. I need to verify his parents, sister and brothers names. If you can help me out, I thank you in advance. My e-mail address is Bear450@aol.com.

ADAMS
Seeking info on David Alexander Bridges, b 1850, possibly in
Springfield, IL. or Decatur, Macon County, IL., m. Oct 30, 1881, in
Weatherford, Parker County, Tx to Merry Virginia Adams, b Sept 1, 1862,
possibly near St. Louis, MO.
Unsure of parents of David Alexander Bridges, possibly Elmo Bridges (may have been a brother) and Sarah Todd. Elmo and Sarah may have had children Tom, John, George, and Bob. May have lived in Mississippi at some point. May have lived near Decatur, Wist County, Tx around 1880's.
Family history suggests that ancestor Bridges changed name from McBride but nothing to substantiate this.

ARRINGTON
I am looking for Harris family. William Robert Harris and wife Margaret Alice Arrington are buried there in Smyna Cemetery, I was told recently. William Robt. Harris b Ark, wife b in Ark. They had some children born
in Wise Co, moved back to Lamar Co, but went back to Wise Co. where they died. His daughter-in-law said they were buried in Sunset, Wise Co., Smyna Cemetery.
Mr. Harris died Aug 9, 1954 and wife Margaret died Jan. 15,1953.
Mr. Harris had a sister, Josephine, that married John Calvin BLAGG. He had another sister, Julia Harris, that married a KEMP, we think in Wise Co.
Mrs. Harris's father, Arrington, lived with them, but he is buried in East Post Cemetery, Lamar Co. The Harrises, Blaggs and Shawharts came to Tex together but lived in Wise Co & Lamar Co. In later life they went to different ways.
Thank you for any help.
ATKINSON
Spent some time on your website. Was very impressed. Would
like to ask you a question. My g grandparents were, according to a
stitched sampler, married in Alvord, Wise Co, TX Oct 5, 1902. I have
written Wise Co and they do not have record of it.
The fact that the sampler was stitched to this data, would have to show
that it was correct. Can you tell me where else I might look? I know
Alvord is very small. They were members of the Church of Christ, and I do
not know at what date they moved to Willow, Greer Co, OK, but that is where
they lived, and my ggrandmother died 8 years later of childbirth, 1910. My
grandfather was the oldest. My g grandfather never remarried. They had
five children, and the last child, died ten years after his mother, of
appendicitis.
They were active members of the Church of Christ in Willow.
Is there a Church of Christ in Alvord, that might still have some records?
Would anyone know of how I could look for the minister at that time.
Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for information about cousin Theodore Adolphus (DOT) Babb who
along with his sister Binaca were taken and held by the Comanche for about
two years.
"Dot" Babb is believed to have lived the latter part of his life in
Amarillo, Potter Co., TX and ranched near Alanreed, TX. It is known that his
brother Hernandez Cortez and sister Margie are buried in Wise County.
The 1910 Census for Donley Co., TX show Dot and his adopted son Robert
living alone. The 1910 Census for Potter Co., TX show Dot age 56, wife Emma
P. Babb age 52 and adopted son Robert age 18.
The book by T. A. Babb "In the Bosom Of The Comanches". was published in
1912. The book makes no mention of the passing of Mrs. Pattie (Graham) Babb
but speaks of her as living. Not having ever published a book I have no
idea of the "lag" time between the collection, assembly and submission for
publication. She would have to have died just prior to or in early 1910.
The 1910 census for Donley Co. showing Dot & son Robert living alone doesn't
bother me as he spent time away from home tending cattle that were at time
quite far from his home base and he and Robert could easily been enumerated
twice in the same year or; this could have been the interval between the two
marriages.
I am trying to find out when DOT Babb and his wife Patty (Graham) Babb died
and where they may be buried. Any help will be greatly apreciated.

BELL/JONES
I am seeking information on the Thomas Jones family. I know they lived
in Wise County in the 1860's. His wife was Nancy and thir children were
Virginia,Aradina Alice(my grandmother), ThomasJr., Gabriel, Mary,
Benjamine, and Rebecca. I know my grandmother married Burl BELL in Wise
county, but I have reached a dead end as to the remainder of the Jones
clan. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
My great grandparents are Sampson and Mary __?__ BENSON (both b MO). Both are listed in the Wise County Census of 1860 with their young daughter Nancy J. (Jane) BENSON; however, their surname BENSON is incorrectly transposed as BEESON. Nancy Jane BENSON (b TX 1857) is my maternal grandmother who died in Shelby Co., TX in 1941. Her parents were killed by Indians from now Oklahoma in one of their raids into Wise Co. in the early 1860s. She and a baby sister survived and where separated and reared by separate families. There was also thought bo be a brother, name unknown, who was killed or perhaps kidnapped and assumed dead. Nancy Jane was reared by a family named Murphy. We later found her with the Murphy family in another TX county, age about 10, in 1870. She is listed in the later census as N. J. Benson, female. Nancy Jane Benson said that she remembered that her Murphy family lived in Decatur until about 1870 and one of her sons drove her from Shelby Co., TX to Decatur and she recognized the old Murphy house. She was trying to find her sister. She knew her name but I failed to write it down. I think it was Mary Elizabeth.
This query is placed in the event that the above James William Benson is related and that the above Mrs. Jim Murphy's husband may be related to the same Murphy family that reared my grandmother; and, hopefully, someone on the list will know about one or both of these families. Any information will be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

BLAGG
These 3 families came from Ark. before 1900. They stopped in Lamar Co and went to Wise Co.
John Calvin Blagg m Josephine Ann Harris in Ark. had daughter there about 1885. Josephine was sister to William Robert Harris.
James Andrew Shawhart had one son I know of to be born in Wise Co. He was Thomas (Tom) Shawhart. His family came back to Lamar Co and settled rest of their life in Ragtown, Lamar Co.
I can remember Mr. William Robert Harris. Mr. Harris and the Blaggs went back to Wise Co. several times. There were several more families of Blaggs, John Wesley Blagg was one. I think one was Thomas Jefferson Blagg. I can't connect all these Blaggs. John Calvin Blagg & wife "Aunt" Josey came back to Ragtown, Lamar Co.Tx.
I never got any information from Montague Co. Your county has been very helpful to me and my Shawhart friend. I've never came across a county as Wise Co. You are number one in my opinion. I was born in Ragtown, Lamar Co, Tx. Small community but we were big family. I now live in Dallas. I am 70 and Joy Shawhart is 77 I think. She has good memory. Mine isn't as good as hers.
Do you have any of these families on Census of records there? Thanks to you and your county.
Betty Ford Smith.

BRIDGES

BURNETT MURDER MYSTERY
My great uncle, Ben Orville Burnett shot and killed his ex father in law,
W.T. Klepper, both of Paradise, Texas. The tial was held Oct 13, 1909.
Burnett was acquited. Seems it was a case of self defense. The trial
lawyers were: For Burnett; Carswell and Mc Murry. For the State of Texas,
Sen. Odell of Cleburne.
Can you help me locate where I can find the court
records or if there is a way to search for any newspaper accounts. The copy
of an old letter I have says that this trial was a major event so I would
assume some records still exist. My great grandfather Lafayette Burnett
had a farm some where in the Paradise area. He moved there after the Civil
War.
The bond set for Burnett was $2,500 and in 1909 I would assume that that was
a ton of money and meant that my great uncle must have shot someone of local
importance.
The shooting took place near the home of a Dill Lindsey.
Any thing you can tell me would be appreciated.

have died or is buried. So far, the great work on Wise Co. cemeteries
haven't turned up anything on Pharaby. She had daughters in Wise Co.,

I'm doing research on Hanson G. Catlett. He came to Texas in 1845 as a
surveyor from Maryland. His wife's name was Eleanor. He acquired land
which was in the northwest of Fort worth about where Lake Worth is and
extended into Wise CO. I found him listed in Johnson, Kinny and Tarrant
Cos. in the land titles. He was with a firm called Toombs, Crawford and
Catlett-his partners being from Georgia. He became ill in Texas and died.
I'm not sure if he was buried there or back in Maryland as his wife was. I
found information about Catlett from the Bobby Pearce book and sent him
E-mail. Thanks for any help you can give me.

family history. I seem to have a lot of it there in Wise County,
specifically in Greenwood. I've got a copy of the book "The History of Wise
County" and have learned some, but I was wondering if you had some more
information. My grandfather was Luther Williams of Greenwood, his father
was Elijah Williams, whose mother was Sarah Alice (Cecil) Williams, her
father was William Robert Cecil, whose father was Tinvil Cecil, who built
the first cabin in Greenwood. Whew! What a line eh?
Anyway, as you can see I've made some progress, but I was wondering if you
had a grave listing of the Greenwood cemetery on hand. That would help me
out quite a bit. I know its not linked on your cemetery page, but I thought
I'd ask anyway.
Thank you so much for your time and effort on this page. It's been kind of
exciting to see my family roots listed on the Census. You've done a great
job here.

My main question with Thomas S. Cogdell was when did he get to Wise County (I recently found him on the 1850 Cass County census) - I thought he was in Wise County by 1850 - it must have been a bit later - and was he the post master in Decatur.
My question about Byron Crandall Rhome is his brand for his ranch, Hereford Park.

Now to my Wise County search. To begin with my name is Jay A. Adams I am a displaced Texan who now lives in California. I was born in Amarillo.
I am searching for information on my maternal grandmother. Her name was Mildred Francis COLLIER, she was born
March 21, 1898 in Bridgeport (Wise County) Texas. She died May 05, 1929 in
Amarillo. My mother was 10 year old when she (grandmother) died, so I never knew her.
The only information I have on her is what I gave you. My grandfather and
mother are both dead, so I know of nobody who can give me information on her
parents and ancestors.

I am looking for information on John Crockett (Jack)
Alexander and Ella N. Collom of Wise Co. mostly in the
Decatur area. Their daughter Winnie Alexander Sears was my
grandmother. I think Jack came from AL and lived w/ the
Collom family. Ella is the d.o. of PPR Collum and Elizabeth
Cates. Does anyone happen to know what the PPR stands for?
PPR live in Collin County for a while..he had 2-3 brothers
and it showed in the census that they lived in the household
of James McBride. I am assuming his stepfather. His mothers
name is Martha.
I did get some information on the Cates family but any more
would be appreciated!
Thank you!
