This is a four page letter sent to us by John
A. Reeves johnareeves@msn.com It
belonged to his great grandfather.
It was written by Newell Anthony Reeves and sent to his brother, John Rufus
Reeves of Red River County.
It's dated October 1, 1893.

Dear Bro and family I take my pen in hand to write to you again I wrote to you some 3 weeks ago and have not herd from you yet We have just been talking about you and wondering why you have not come and I took a notion I would write to you agane and see if I could not here from you This is Sunday evening half past one oclock This leaves all well and hopeing it may find you all in helth I will now tell you about my crops I have my corn gathered I made 16 good loads besides I have fed about 4 loads out of the field Will have plenty to do me My cotton is good considering the hot dry wether we had through the summer I think I will make 15 bales I have about about 7 bales now open Have only picked out one bale and half I work with my tools awhile after cotton was open enough to pick and we have just lost this week on account of wet wether Bro Rufus I do wish you would get on the trane and come out here I know you would like here along ways better than there I would be glad you would come and bring your family but if you cant all come you could get on the trane and come It would not cost you much and you would not loose much time and I don�t think you ever would begrudge coming Pleas write when you get this and let me know whether to look for you or not There is no negroes in this country I don�t believe I have ever told you that before There is plenty of churches and schools here There has been more good meetings here this summer than I have ever sean before There was 2 protracted meetings held around a half miles from us this summer The last lasted three weeks and there was 2 protracted meetings held at lake valey this summer they wer Baptist meetings That is 8 miles north of us and one held at union hill that is 2 miles west of here Another meeting will convene at lake valey next Satturday nite and they had good meetings at Bethel 6 miles east of here that was a Baptist meeting There is where our membership is and there has been lots of other meetings around too numerous to mention I will now tell you a little about our town Alvord
This is Monday morning Oct 2 and we had the powerfulest rain last nite that has been since I have been in the country
It is on the Fort Worth and Denver City Rail Road 51 miles north of Ft Worth and is a real business place has 3 churches one magnificent school house 2 lumber yards 2 [mills?] 2 gins 3 hotels 2 hard ware houses and a number of dry good and grocery houses also have a broom factory and canning factory 3 drug stores 2 furniture stores one livery stable and 2 black smith shops I have wrote all I can think of just now I have my house done and painted Was about to forget to tell you that So I will close hopeing to see you soon or here from you Write soon and often Write soon as you get this We all send our best love to you all
