The 1860 Census for Wise
County was 3,034 people on 76 pages:
Pages 1- 8 give Catlett Creek as the Post Office
Pages 9-40 give Decatur as the Post Office
Pages 41-63 give Prairie Point (now Rhome) as the Post Office
Pages 64-76 give Cactus Hill (now Lake Bridgeport) as the Post Office
(The toll bridge had not yet been built at Bridgeport)
Slaves are not counted in this census.
According to The Pioneer History of Wise County by Cliff Cates, "During
those first peaceful years the county population grew fast. In 1858 there were
357 people + 40 slaves, 345 horses, 2792 cattle. By the next year the population
had doubled and there were 75 slaves 2000 horses and over 11,000 cattle."
